Whether you’re using your semi-trailer to transport your own goods or someone else’s, keeping your cargo safe will always be top priority. That’s why the experts at Utility Trailer Sales of Washington have created this guide to semi-trailer cargo safety.

Understanding Weight Limitations

Even the biggest and most powerful semi-trucks have their limits. A truck’s gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR is the maximum weight that it can safely (and legally) haul. When calculating how much cargo your semi-truck can carry, be sure to include the weight of the trailer, any add-ons, fuel, passengers, and the truck itself in addition to the weight of the cargo. If you’re not sure how much weight you’re hauling around, visit a weigh station.

Create a Safe Loading Space

Safely loading and unloading cargo requires that you and your team clear enough space to work. It’s also important that you stay aware of the conditions surrounding the loading zone. For example, when loads are stacked on top of each other, there’s always a possibility that something will fall and harm someone. Make sure that everyone working in the loading zone is aware of the risks and takes appropriate action to stay safe.

Plan Accordingly for Each Load

Each load is unique and will present unique problems. Loading by hand is different from loading via crane or forklift. That’s why you should assess the cargo and the challenges it might present before you start loading. You can then draw up a plan that ensures you’ll be able to load everything safely.

Reduce Slip and Trip Hazards

Uneven or slippery loading surfaces can make loading hazardous. Make sure that all loading team members are wearing appropriate work shoes and are careful whenever they walk near or climb on the trailer.

Properly Securing a Load

Always take care to secure your load using tie-downs, tarps, and/or bungee cords. Different loads will often require different methods to properly secure them, so be adaptable. Be sure to inspect the load to make absolutely sure that it is secure before you allow the semi-trailer to hit the road.
