When you’re on the road as a full-time trucker, it can be easy to let some things fall by the wayside while you’re focused on getting where you’re going and making your deadlines. You know that keeping your semi truck maintained is important, but your cab may not be at the forefront of your mind when you’re thinking about what needs to be taken care of.

A clean cab can help you stay organized, boost your mental health, and make you look more professional to clients and coworkers. Here’s how to tidy up your cab and keep it clean.

Get Supplies

Some handy cleaning items will help you to keep your cab tidy, and they can be easily stored in your cab using an over-the-seat organizer, a bucket, a cabinet, or a plastic storage bin tucked under the seat. Here are the supplies you’ll want to have on hand:

  • Handheld vacuum: A small rechargeable or battery-operated vacuum cleaner will let you suck up crumbs, leaves, and other debris that can make your cab floor filthy.
  • Small trash bags: Keep a box of mini trash bags in your cab so that you can bag up your napkins, food wrappers, and other garbage.
  • Bleach wipes: Sanitize your steering wheel and dashboard with bleach wipes (make sure that the surfaces in your cab can withstand bleach first) to prevent disease.
  • Glass cleaner: Wipe your windshield and windows with glass cleaner to improve visibility.
  • Paper towels & soft cloths: Use these with your liquid cleaners to wipe up spills.
  • Leather cleaner: If your seats are leather, you can keep them in good condition with a leather cleaning solution.

Pick Up Trash & Personal Items

Start by picking up every piece of trash and recycling and bag it up to remove it from your cab. It’s a good idea to have a small trash can or bag in your cab that will keep your trash off the floor.

Also, gather up any personal items that may have become scattered on the floor and seats and put them where they belong. You can use plastic bins or over-the-seat organizers to store atlases, pens, paperwork, tissues, sunglasses, hygiene items, and other necessities.

Vacuum & Wipe Surfaces

Take your shop vacuum and sweep it over the floors. If your truck has removable floor mats, take them out and shake them off outside. You can even hose them down if they’re rubber.

Use your spray cleaners and paper towels or soft cloths to wipe down the seats, dashboard, controls, and door handles of your cab. Spray glass cleaner on the interiors of your windows and windshield and wipe them down to remove streaks and smears.
