How to Put Snow Chains on Your Semi-Truck
If you've never had to drive through snow on a haul before, you’ve probably never had to put snow chains on your rig. Luckily, Utility Trailer Sales of Washington has created this step by step guide to make the whole process as simple as possible.
1. Get Ready
When you start to notice the snow piling up, then it is time to pull over and break out the snow chains. If possible, use the highway’s designated chaining area. Brush the snow off your mud flaps and tires before you begin. Remember that you only need to install chains on the drive wheels. Do not attempt to install the chains without sufficient light or in blizzard conditions.
2. Lay Out & Inspect Chains
Lay your chains out in front of the wheels you plan to chain. Use this as an opportunity to check for any signs of damage. Never use chains that appear broken or worn.
3. Drape Chains Over Wheels
Lift up the chains and drape them equally over the front and back of the tire. The front end needs to be as close to the base of the wheel as possible. Center the chain on the tire, keeping it as straight as you can.
4. Drive Over Chains
Get in the cab and start the engine. Drive your truck forward a few feet so that the tires roll over the chains. Then turn off the engine and park so that you can secure the chains.
5. Tighten & Secure
You can tighten the cams on your chains with an adjusting wrench. TIghten them until they are snug, and then secure the chains using bungee cords. Drive a short bit to make sure that the chains will not fall off. If everything is fine, you can continue on your journey.
