A long haul is as tough on your truck as it is on you and the tires probably take the most punishment of all. The last thing you want is to have to pull over to change a flat. Luckily, there are some things you can do to take care of your tires and reduce your chances of an unforeseen incident. 1. Proper Inflation

Underinflating your tires can lead to excessive wear. Overinflating them can reduce your fuel efficiency. Therefore, it is important to keep your tires in that sweet spot between the two. Luckily, it is easy to keep track of the tire pressure as long as you have a pressure gauge. Every once in a while you should take out your gauge and compare your tires’ pressure to the manufacturer's recommendations.

2. Axle Health

Regularly inspect your tires’ treads for wear. If you find that you are experiencing excessive wear and cannot identify an obvious cause, a bent axle may be to blame. This common trailer problem can be easily identified by a quick stop to a service center.

3. Weather Protection

Weather can also be rough on your tires. For example, excessive sun damage can create cracks in your tires’ sidewalls. Try to store your truck indoors when possible.

4. Loading Your Trailer

All trailers have a number called the Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the total weight your trailer can handle safely. Exceeding this number puts more strain on your tires, damaging them. More importantly, driving a semi-truck loaded beyond its Gross Combined Weight Rating is both unsafe and illegal, so always stay within the limit.

5. Weight Distribution

Even if you stay within the limit, improper weight distribution can cause tire damage as well. Try to have even distribution from left to right and from front to back. This will minimize your chances of a tire blowout.

6. The Type of Tire

There is more than one type of tire, so shop around to find the one that best fits you. For example, radial tires offer improved traction, an extended lifespan, and better fuel efficiency. With a little research, you can find excellent tire options within your budget.
